At the annual F8 developer conference, Facebook has announced a new redesign for both its website and mobile app – FB5. Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has described the redesign as “the biggest change we’ve made to the Facebook app and site in five years”. The redesign also comes with an updated logo – a brighter blue bubble with the distinctive white f in the middle.
The new update has a big emphasis on the Groups feature. More than 400 million users currently belong to a group. However, the social media giant wants all 2.38 billion users to be in meaningful Groups that they will interact with. The update brings new tools that will make it easier for users to discover new Groups of interest to them. It will also be easier to get relevant group recommendations in other areas such as Marketplace and Facebook Watch. There are also going to be new features to specific types of groups:
- Health Support groups will allow members to post questions and share information without their name appearing on a post.
- Job groups will have a new template for employers to post openings as well as easier ways for job seekers to message the employer and apply directly through the social media platform.
- Gaming groups will have a new chat feature so members can create threads for different topics within the group.
- Facebook is also looking at ways for buyers to easily ask questions and place orders on Facebook Live without leaving the live broadcast.
Another feature that is featuring heavily in the new update is Events. The new Events tab will have a map view so you can see where events you are interested in are in proximity to each other. The design also makes it easier to find new events, organise your calendar and quickly look through events your friends are hosting as well as public events you might be interested in.

The mobile redesign will roll out immediately across Andriod and iOS devices whilst the desktop redesign is expected to follow in the coming months.
