It is estimated that there will be around 2.77 billion social network users around the world in 2019. This up from 2.46 billion in 2017. With so many people now using social media, you will struggle to find a company that does not have some sort of presence on there. All these companies will be competing with each other to get their content seen by you, whether that is organically or paid. However, whilst all these companies are competing to be seen, are they really helping their brand? We have taken a look at some of the most common mistakes that companies are still making on social media that is damaging their brand.

1. Using the Wrong Platform

Each social media platform is different, and it is important that a company understands which platform is right for them. There is no point a company setting up accounts on all the social media platforms out there because it is highly unlikely that they will be relevant. If you want to target the over 50’s, you will be wasting our time by setting up a Snapchat account as the majority of your customers will not be using it. The same can be said if you are targeting teenagers, LinkedIn is not the platform where the majority of them spend their time.

It is also not just about who you are targeting but also the content you can produce. If you are a photography company, the first social media platform you should set up is an Instagram account as this platform is heavily imaged based. If you are looking to target your exact customers, a Facebook page is great as this can be achieved through their targeted ads.

2. Not Understanding #Hashtags

It is important for companies to know when to use hashtags and which hashtags are relevant to use. This also depends on the social media platform that you are using. If you go on Twitter and Instagram, you can easily search the platforms via hashtags to find content that is relevant to what you are looking for. However, hashtags on Facebook and LinkedIn are not as prominent. There are many sites that will let you know which hashtags are trending – Ritetag and Display Purposes – so you know which ones will get your content seen. It is important though that you only use hashtags that are relevant to your content. Using trending hashtags that are not relevant, but which you believe will get your content seen, will only make it look like you do not know what you are doing and will turn followers away.

3. Incomplete Social Media Profiles

This is a very basic mistake that companies make. Fortunately, this is an easy mistake to fix. Not only does it not look professional, it is also a big opportunity that you are missing to promote your company. Ensure that as much as your about section is completed as this is a chance to let potential customers know what you do. You are also able to add links to your website and other ways that you can be contacted. Header images are also a great way to creatively promote your company.

4. Not Responding to Followers

One of the big advantages of having a social media platform is being able to react in real time. An increasing amount of people are heading to social media platforms to interact with companies to leave reviews, complaints or to ask questions. It is important to acknowledge these comments, both good and bad in a timely manner. Even if there are concerns you are not able to help with, you can still ask them to email the person or department that will be able to help.

5. Only using the Platforms as a Sales Pitch

Social media users do not go online to read sales pitch after sales pitch when they are scrolling through their feeds. They want to see information that is interesting and useful to them. By creating content that your followers will engage with will, in turn, lead to them becoming customers. It will also show your followers that you know what you are talking about and are experts in your industry.

6. Not Proofreading

This sounds like an obvious task to do yet there are still a lot of companies who are sending messages out on their social media platforms with grammatical mistakes. Whilst your content might be great, people will focus on the mistake and you will lose your brand reputation. Whilst Facebook and LinkedIn allow you to edit your posts when you spot a mistake, Twitter does not yet have this feature so you will have to delete and repost.
